Rick-

It would be best to use the same color. For a vertical redwood fence you could use either the Defy Hardwood Stain again or the Defy Extreme. The Extreme will offer slightly better UV resistance. Make sure to lightly clean first.

Thanks for the repeat business and glad the it has worked so well for you!

John-

1. It would be best to strip for maximum performance for the TWP.
2. It would be much quicker to use a pressure washer when using the RAD Stripper to rinse off the old stain. You do not need an injector to apply as a pump sprayer would work as well.

Thanks

Hello,

Four years ago I purchased a five gallon tub of Defy Hardwood Stain and applied it per your instructions to my new redwood fence. Well, it turned out fantastic! Now I notice a slight darkening/greying going on and it is time to protect again. The color is still fine so would it work to apply a clear coat of your Extreme Stain and would that last me another four years without darkening further? Or, I don't know, if I applied your light walnut Extreme Stain over my old light walnut would the new color come out darker? I will order whatever it is that you recommend. Your stain is the best I have ever tried.

Thank you,

Rick

ps.... feel free to post this on your questions board since this must be a common question.

I have a pressure treated pine deck with that had Sickens on it. It was stripped last year but a few small areas (2"x3")remained. The man then applied a clear coat with a tint. I would like to apply a TWP semitransparent stain to the deck.
1. Do I need to strip the deck first or can I just use your Restore-A-Deck system?
2. If I have to strip it and I use the RAD stripper, will I need to use a power washer or can it be done with a garden hose? Your site shows the application tools as injector, sprayer, stiff brush.
Thank you,
John

Hi-I have a fiberglass front door that gets a lot of afternoon sun. It was stained and then polyurethane. It looks terrible and I was wondering if you make a product that would work? I realize I probably have to sand all the prior materials off (including the old stain), which might be difficult because this door is textured and wood "looking". I am considering just painting the door, but thought I'd ask about the defy product first because I had such great results with the extreme stain on my huge deck project, which was pressure treated wood. I really am a believer in the Extreme stain, it was easy to work with, easy to clean up, looks great and lasts! (I do have a little peeling in a couple areas, but I think that was due to operator error in putting it on too thick!:) Thanks in advance for any advice!

No, you cannot stop the rusting.

Oxalic will not work any better then the Restore-A-Deck Step 2. I think it will go away just fine. If not then a very diluted phosphoric acid would work best.

No, additional sanding will not help.

If I can get the spots removed with the brightener or another product, allow to dry for a day or 2 and then get a coat of stain on it before it gets rained on again, would that keep the nails from any further rusting/staining? Also, are you talking about like a more concentrated oxalic acid if the restore does not work? Also, would it help to try and sand away some of the staining with a detail sander being careful not to hit the nail any further?

Chris,

I would look at the SuperSeal products. Either the SuperSeal25 or the SuperSeal30. Both will really enhance the color of your pavers and leave a deep rich wet look.

Thanks

Pat-

The black spots are rust. When you sanded the nails the coating must have been removed from the nails. Rain will rust the metal which on wood turns black. The Step 2 Brightener should remove these spots.I would do the cleaning and brightening. Let the brightener sit on the wood until the black disappears. If it does not go away then a slightly more aggressive acid will be needed.

The one issue is that you will probably get the spots back again when it rains as it seems that you removed the galvanized coatings from the nail heads. Hopefully not though.

Let me know how it turns out.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I have ordered your Restore-A-Deck cleaner and brightener products and have a question. I have a 6 month old tight knot cedar deck with Sikkens SRD stain put on it after it was constructed. The stain started to grow mold over the winter and would not come off with a simple cleaner and pressure washer so I had to sand off the old stain and mold.

After the sanding was completed and deck was rained on, I am seeing a few black stains around the nail heads on the deck floor. I assume it was from the sander going over the top of the galvanized nails.

I am hoping your cleaner and/or brightener will remove this awful black discoloration caused from this. Do you have any additional information or tips to offer for removing these stains? Possibly a stronger mixture, longer set up time or will it work on this with just the standard procedure? If your product will not remove this particular stain, do you have another recommendation for me?

Thanks for your help,

Pat

Kim-

It would be best to use a stain stripper to remove any residue of the old stain. IPE is extremely dense and requires periodic re application every 6-12 months in a sunny climate such as Beverly Hills. In addition the majority of good stains cannot be sold into your area due to VOC restriction laws.

Sorry about that.

Tim,

For two coats you would need about three 5 gallon pails of the Defy Extreme Stain. The defy extreme can be applied with a sprayer, brush, stain pad or combination. For best results I would apply the first coat lightly with the sprayer followed by a second coat 20 minutes later with a brush or stain pad. This will even out the appearance as well.

90 degrees is the hottest temperature that I would apply.

Thanks!

New PTP should dry for at least 1-2 months. You should then use a wood cleaner and a wood brightener to prep and remove the mill glaze.

Restore-A-Deck

Many stains will not absorb into new wood well. We strongly suggest the TimberOil for all new wood as it will absorb into new wood:

I have a deck made out of IPE Brilliant wood. When it was installed they stained it and the stain washed right off during the first rain storm. It was obviously not the right type of stain. Will I need to apply a stripper to make sure that the old stain is completely gone? Will cleaning be sufficient? I want the absolute best stain available for this type of wood. What do you suggest?

Is it possible to get a sample of the recommened stain? My client lives in Beverly Hills and is very picky. If I could get a sample, a couple ounces, that would be great. they will definitely purchase the stain if they like it. They have about 2000 sqft+ of decking. Thank you

Hi- I have a few questions. How much Defy extreme Stain do I need? Covering a wooden fence to prevent sun damage here in Phoenix. I calculated the area that I am covering is 1,250 sq feet.

Also, how is this product applied? Brush? Sprayer? or either? How many coats need to be applied?

Lastly, what is the hottest temperature that I can apply the product in?

Thanks,

Defy Extreme Clear will typically last 1 year on a horizontal surface. The Defy Extreme Stain in one of the three colors will last 2-3 times longer then the clear.

On verticals both last twice as long.

Hello. I currently have an order in progress with shipping with you all. My order was for your stripper product and, per your instructions, the brightener product. I plan to use these products to strip off the existing stain off my cedar deck in prep for re-staining. My question for you is if I must also use the cleaner product in addition to the stripper/brightener. I expect not as the stripper should remove everything in regards to any mildew, etc. My deck does not have any appreciable dirtiness except for normal wear due to there being no trees around it. So no sap, no significant mildew issues, etc. What is your advice? Is the cleaner and associated step needed for good stain adhesion? or should the stripper and brightener be enough? Thanks for your help!

How do you know when your new pressures treated wood is ready to stain? Some say to pour water and see if it absorbs but how long do you wait to see if it absorbs?

We want to make sure that we do this right the first time as we ruined our last deck with Behr decking paint.

Thank you very much.

Are you saying that Defy Extreme “semi-transparent” stain has to be re-applied as frequently as Defy Extreme “clear stain” has to be re-applied? That does not seem to match what I’ve read elsewhere about other brands of stains. Everyone else seems to say that darker stains last longer than clear stains.

Also, how frequently will Extreme “semi-transparent” stain need to be re-coated on a vertical surface, i.e., siding? Other sites say that vertical surfaces can go twice as long between re-coatings as horizontal surfaces.

Thanks

I would use a deck staining pad such as the Padco Pads or Shurline Floor Mops. They allow you to "push" the stain deep into the wood.

Defy makes excellent products and are some of our top sellers too.

Wet on Wet means to apply the second coat 20-40 minutes after the first coat. All new ACQ wood should dry for 1-2 months prior to applying the TWP 1500 Stain. You will need to clean and brighten first prior to applying. It can be applied to all wood types.

Thanks!

What series do you recommend for redwood deck and pine log rails after all prep is done. Location is MT, full sun and no mildew problems. Thanks

I'm interested in the time between maintenance applications of the Extreme semi-transparent stain. But when I download the product datasheet for Extreme (non-clear) stain, I get the product sheet for "Clear" Extreme stain. For "Clear", the product sheet recommends re-staining at least every two years. How frequently should the Extreme semi-transparent stain be re-applied? From what I've read on the Internet, clear stains must be re-applied more frequently than semi-transparent stains.

AS to the 1500 series...what does 1-2 coats "wet on wet" mean. We are building a deck using a combo of reg. pressure treated wood and the ACQ wood. We are told to immediately stain the ACQ wood for protection. Can this product go on the reg. pressure treated as well, or do I need to wait a month or 2?. We had a builder tell us that this stain can go on all the wood at the same time without waiting. We are confused...

Oliver,

That is a tough question. There is not a best paver sealer for all scenarios. What exactly are you looking for? If your main goal is to make them look richer then I would use a solvent based paver sealant. They will darken the overall appearance very well.

Let us know if you want a higher gloss or more of a matter shine.

I am curious, you sell a lot of different paver sealers. Out of all of them, which would you consider the best? I have been reading reviews of different paver sealers on line and I am confused as to which sealer I should use. Solvent or water based? Wet look or matte shine?

Please help me figure out what I should order. My pavers are extremely dull and I really want them to look richer.

Thanks so much in advance!

No you should never apply a clear sealer first then apply a different brand of stain on top. This may hinder the stain's ability to penetrate and adhere properly to the wood.

I would use the Defy Stain Stripper followed by the Defy Wood Brightener to prep. You may need to strip more then once with a semi-solid stain. Other options to strip would be the Restore-A-Deck stains Stripper or HD80. Both will need to be neutralized with a wood brightener.

I would use the Defy stain for hardwoods on cedar wood. It will penetrate better and perform better.

Typically needs to be re coated every two to three years.

Hello,
I have a red cedar wood deck in Connecticut. It was last stained a few years ago with Ben Moore semi-solid stain (oil base).

What products would you recommend for stripping the Ben Moore stain/prep?

Would you recommend using Defy Hardwood Stain or Defy Extreme?

Also, how often would you typically have to reapply the stain in Connecticut?

I'm replacing rough cedar siding that was water-damaged from years of rainfall splashing against the lower wall (house does not have rain gutters). I want to apply a clear water-repellent treatment to help protect the new cedar siding, then cover over it with a second coat using the Sherwin Williams semi-transparent stain that matches the rest of the house.

Is the Defy Extreme Clear appropriate for this usage? How much sq. ft coverage should I expect to get?

Thanks

Does not surprise me that it was Sherwin Williams Deckscapes. It is a poor performing deck stain.

Stripping does prep the deck for a solid stain if that is what you decide. We are not fans of solid stains as they are basically paints and there is no going back to the natural beauty of the wood. Unfortunately you are correct that you are in a position where you may not have a choice.

It's too bad there are stains out there that actually cause more damage then good.

Both Defy and TWP are very good stains without one being better then the other.

Honeytone will fade in 18-24 months while Natural would be 24+ in most scenarios on a horizontal surface. Railings always last twice as long.

Thank you very much for your help. I believe the original stain is a sherwin williams stain. Sanding is what I am trying to avoid at all costs. It would be extremely difficult as many of the screws are not sunk low enough for a sanding and the ballisters would take forever. Plus the stain between the boards could not be reached. After stripping with the hd80 would a solid stain adhere without the sanding? If your answer is no would going back with the same stain from sherwin williams work?

Thanks for the quick response. I know this is somewhat subjective, but in general (for an application in full sun) how long does the product last before graying becomes an issue? And how much longer might the Natural last than the Honeytone?

Finally, I'm also looking at the possibility of using a stain from Defy. Can you provide some info as to why TWP would be better?

Thanks again.

Lightest is the 1515 Honeytone. It enhances similar to as if wet with water.

Take inconsideration that you must have a tint in the wood to protect from UV graying. The richer/darker the color, the longer the stain will protect from graying. For example the Honeytone will fade faster then the Natural. The Natural will fade faster the the Cedartone.

All show the natural wood grain.

Do you know the brand of the semi-transparent stain that you are trying to remove? It sounds like what we call a acrylic water based stain. These types of semi-transparent stains do not penetrate very well but rather sit on top of the wood. They are prone to peeling heavily. A few examples of an acrylic wood stains would be Behr Premium and Sherwin Williams Deck Scapes. They are also the most difficult stains to remove as they are basically thin paints. Deck stain strippers will have a difficult time penetrating through the stain. HD80 is a very good stripper but I am guessing it may have difficulty as well. Your best bet would be to strip off as much as possible with the HD80 or RAD Stain Stripper. After you will most likely need to sand the rest off.

I have a 10 year old redwood deck that has a pretty heavy cost of semi-transparent stain on it. 3 to 4 years ago it was professionally re-stained and the stain did not adhere well. Most of that stain is now gone. That is why I am doing this myself this time. I would like to restain with a semi-transparent stain again but the original coating ranges from pretty good in the shade to barely there in the sun. I tried stripping with Flood's deck stripper with hardly any stain removed--I mean barely noticeable. I left it in contact for 30 minutes the first time and then 1 hour the next. So this stain does not want to come off. I was looking at the HD-80. I have about 1,000 sp. ft. of deck. Is that my best choice?

In your 1500 series stain, which color is the lightest? Does the lightest color most closely match the natural color of pressure treated pine?

We are trying to decide on a color. We like the color of the natural, clean wood and would like to maintain the visibility of the grain. What color do you think would allow this?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a list of stains that work for IPE. IPE is such a dense wood that it typically needs reapplication annually. Best to choose a stain that can be easily re-coated when needed after a good cleaning.

Topic : Penetrating Deck Stain Questions

Deck stain strippers work by penetrating through the decking stains into the wood. They then soften the top layer of wood cells so that you can wash out the old stain without damage to the wood.

When you have a deck stain that films (similar to paint) on top of the surface as it dries, a deck stain stripper will have a much harder time penetrating. This results in the stripper being less effective since the decking stain has encapsulated the wood.

It is much easier to remove a penetrating deck stain since the stripper can dive deep into the wood softening the bond between the stain and the wood.

Penetrating stains are the way to go with exterior wood:

1. The better it penetrates the less chance of peeling/wearing
2. When a stain does not peel it is much easier to clean and re-coat in the future.
3. Penetrating stains can be easily removed if needed.

Although I'm not the author of the original question, can you please explain why a penetrating stain would be more easily stripped off than one that "sits on top" of the wood? At first glance, it seems the opposite would be true.

I would look at the Restore-A-Deck Stain Stripper followed by the Restore-A-Deck Brightener to prep the wood.

IPE Oil would be a great choice after the wood is restored and the Penofin removed.

The deck is 14 years old and has been cleaned and sealed with Penofin each year. Last year the Penofin seemed to have a different consistency, more opaque though the same brand and name as before. Now this spring the deck is very dark, almost black and the usual power wash has not cleaned it and brought it back. Suggestion on what to use to truly strip it down and bring back the beautiful color? Should I consider switching to another sealer like IPE Oil?

The efflorescence cleaner is not working most likely because it has been sealed already. If so you will need to remove the sealer first with a concrete sealer stripper then use the cleaner.

I would look at the SuperSeal Matte as it will enhance the color but has a lower shine.

Buildup happens when you over apply. If you reapply one coat every 2-3 years you should not have an issue.

We had our pool deck re-done last year with brick pavers and the pool edge with copping tile (bricks). The contractor used a water base sealer which did very little to enhance the color of the bricks and now the copping tiles are showing heavy effervescent(?). I have tried cleaning the copping tiles with an acid base cleaner with little success. I would like a sealer that would bring out the color of the bricks like it is when wet, but do not want a super high glossy look. Would like your suggestion on cleaning the copping tiles and the sealer for the pavers. I understand that when using a solvent based sealer you need to strip it periodically to prevent build up. Is that correct, and if so,how often?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

I see that The Sealer Store now carries IPE Oil Hardwood Finish. This is a great stain for IPE and other types of exotic hardwoods. One thing many people that have exotic decks don't understand is that you have to use a deck stain that is designed for hardwoods.

I've seen hardwood decking with regular deck stain on it and it's an eyesore not to mention it doesn't last very long. IPE is so dense that the stain barely penetrates the wood. It takes special stain to even get a few millimeters of penetration.

I like the IPE Oil Hardwood Finish and it's great you offer that now. It's definitely my first choice in staining IPE and other hardwood decks with.

Whenever you switch a brand of stain is is best to remove the current stain first. If you do not you may have issues with adhering. This goes for all brands.

Penetrating stains are substantially easier to maintain over stains that sit on top like Behr. They can be cleaned and re-coated as needed. In addition they are easily stripped off without the need for sanding if the need to remove arises.

For oil-based penetrating stains that are VOC compliant for New York, I would look at:

Armstrong Clark Stains
TWP 1500 Series
TheSealerStore TimberOil Brand

I would look at the same brands for FL.

First I think I should tell you I prefer an oil with some but minimum color PENETRATING sealer. I really don't want a sealer that will SIT ON TOP. I want to be able to reapply without needing to sand the whole surface.

I have 2 properties. One in NY, one in FL.

My first question involves my NY Long Island 20 + year CEDAR deck which we have previously applied the penofin blue. We had great success sealing this deck prior to the VOC regulations. Now I have tried a couple of products and not been happy. It is essential to choose a product that will NOT REQUIRE SANDING as this is a BIG deck. I had to sand off Behr in order to apply the Penofin. I want to be able to reapply the same product or switch products WITHOUT sanding.

My second property is on the west coast of Florida. I am near the Gulf south of Sarasota. We have just finished building several cypress gates. Which of your products would you recommend knowing I want to keep the wood as natural as possible, have the option of re-sealing without sanding and have the option of changing product down the road without sanding.

Thank you.

1. The wood should be cleaned and brightened. I would suggest using the Defy companion product. Defy Wood Cleaner and Defy Wood Brightener.
2. 45-90 degrees is normal for applying the Defy Stains. Make sure it does not freeze overnight.
3. Typically 1 coat is needed for brand new wood as new wood is not very absorbent. If it was may deck I would put one coat on now and a "maintenance" coat in a year or so. Putting too much on now can cause the stain to not absorb into the wood properly.
4. A 5 gallon pail for 1 coat should be enough but it does depend on how it is applied.
5. The wood should dry for 48 hours after cleaning before applying the Defy Stain.
6. Doesn't matter. If you want to send a picture, feel free too.

In Dec 2011 we ordered 2 samples from you (Light Walnut & Cedartone) to use on our recently built pressure-treated pine deck. We compared it to a sample of Behr semi-transparent stain and certainly liked the look of Defy better.

So now the challenge before we order the big cans. The deck is about 600 square feet for traffic areas + additional for sides, railings, bench seats, so we really can't afford to make a mistake on this. My husband and a friend of ours are pretty DIY-minded and would like to take this on the seal/stain project themselves (my husband watched the Defy video). The deck was completed in November, so there's been some rain and some traffic on it. Now we've had some cold temps, too(we're in North Texas).

1. How should it be cleaned before they start?
2. What temperature parameters are there for application?
3. How many coats do you recommend?
4. How many cans should we order?
5. How much time between cleaning and application do you recommend?
6. Would it be helpful if I posted a picture & exact measurements for each section to help determine how much to order?

Never. Only available in the Defy Epoxy Wood Stain.

Any of the colors in the Defy Extreme Stain will work as they are transparent and do not mask (conceal) the redwood but enhance the natural tones of the wood. Natural pine is the lightest and would enhance similar to a wet look. Cedartone adds a little more "orange" and Light Walnut adds a brownish/red tone.

Thanks

Best for the Tigerwood is the Penofin Exotic Wood Stain.

In my opinion I would use the Penofin Red Label on the PTP. It offers the best UV and mold protection.

Does not matter on the color but lighter colors seem to do better with Pressure Treated Pine when is comes to overall appearance.

I would reapply every 18-24 months or as needed.

Thanks

We are using penofin original formula on some tiger wood, and have always loved this product!

And on the same deck, we are using some Penofin Verde on the pressure treated ACQ.

What I wonder is, does the red label give more protection on the pressure treated? or equal?
And I know the the green label product is specially formulated for pressure treated lumber, but I can not find what is in it. what is in it- as far as oils? does it give an equal amount of protection?

ultimately I'm wondering which of these products gives the most UV protection?, then most mildew protection? and which product "splotches" in the pressure treated yellow pine the least? (aside from a "clear" color)

and how often do you recommend retreating the pressure treated wood?

thanks- Carlton

It's mostly just old sand, dirt, and weeds so I'll just pressure wash the brick pavers first with no specific concrete cleaner. If any stains show up under all the dirt and gunk, I'll deal with it then but I don't think there should be any.

Good to know. Luckily it's only been a year since it was last done and it still looks pretty good. We just want to stay on top of it so it doesn't get bad again. I think it's easier to maintain a deck as opposed to a full blown deck restoration. A good wash with Defy wood cleaner and a coat of Defy deck stain should do the trick.

When cleaning pavers to remove dirt and weeds you typically just need a pressure washer. The use of a cleaner is typically needed of you have a stain of some sort and the cleaners are specific to the stain. For example, a rust stain would need a rust cleaner, a oil stain would need a degreaser, etc.

See here for a full list of concrete cleaners.

Cleaning and recoating is very easy when done annualy. If you wait 2-3 years between coats then you will need to do a more thorough cleaning and apply the suggested two coats of Defy.

TWP is a penetrating stain. It is not possible to add anything into it. It is not prone to being slippery but it really depends on the wood, how it is prepped and if applied properly.

TWP Stains are not designed to be top coated. Putting another stain or paint on top will most likely cause issues with the paint adhering properly to the TWP.

We are going to use TWP 1500 Cedartone or Natural on 4x6 Western Red Cedar "resawn" decking on a pedestrian bridge. We're told an abrasive (crushed walnut shells or =) can't be added to the TWP (i.e. won't work), but if we find the surface is slippery in the rain, will we be able to apply another manufacturer's solid body stain or paint with abrasive suspended in it over TWP 1500 & have it adhere with just primer? Or do you have a better solution?

When applying a "maintenance" coat to Defy Stains it would be best to use the Defy Wood Cleaner. This will remove the dirt and grime. I would only apply one coat of the Defy Hardwood Stain since it has only been 1 year.

Which should I use on a pressure treated wood deck, which was previously stained. I know that it needs to be stripped and brightened prior to staining but which stain should I use - extreme or just the epoxy stain? Do you sell the stripper in 5 gallon buckets?

Something is coming out of the bricks or mortar. The problem is figuring out what it is first. It could be many things and there is not one cleaner/solution that will fix all. I would look at getting this test kit to see what will clean it:
Efflorescence Test Kit

These cleaners though can be used on the shingles and not sure what can be used for shingles.

In addition, it is not going to be possible to stop this from happening in the future with a sealer. Nothing can be done to stop this from reoccurring. In many cases though it will stop leaching on it's own.

Could you please check out this pic and give me your recommendations? It is BRAND NEW construction--quite expensive. I'm thinking that the stains on the roof are from the mortar on the chimney? I'm thinking it should be washed (the chimneys' that is) and sealed first. Then do the roof. I'm open to suggestions or products that would best do this job. I'm VERY skeptical BECAUSE it's not even finished yet and I'm afraid to do any damage. 1.5 m $ home.

At any rate would you please take a look and give me your thoughts?

Thank you very much!

You should be able to as long as the previous sealer has not failed by turning milky white in color. If it has then you will need to strip off the Behr concrete sealer first. We have had many complaints about the Behr Wet Look Sealer not leaving any shine and or turning white in color after a few months.

In California you are limited to products with a low VOC limit of 250 or less. The best TWP stain would be the TWP 1500 Series. It offers excellent UV protection.

I applied a water base sealer 18 months ago. Can I apply a solvent base sealer such as the SuperSeal25 over it? I did not like the look of the water base product that I got from Home Depot. It did not leave any shine as promised

What is your best TWP wood stain product, as in best protection for longest period of time, for a new western red cedar bridge, rails, & trellis application, in California?

Thanks in advance
