Staining pressure treated wood is easy when you use this professional deck stain. Defy Epoxy Fortified wood deck stain comes in 5 semi-transparent deck stain colors: Natural Pine, CedarTone, Light Walnut, Redwood and Driftwood Gray. Defy Epoxy Fortified wood stain is a high performance semi-transparent penetrating finish that helps prevent the destructive effects of water, fungi, and UV radiation on exterior wood. With its unique epoxy fortified synthetic resin, this product is able to penetrate wood pores to block out the damaging effects of weather while allowing the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. Defy Epoxy Fortified wood stain is ideally suited for staining pressure treated wood and can be used on interior or exterior wood surfaces including: wood siding, log homes, decks, fences, shake shingles, outdoor wood furniture, pressure treated lumber, and all other naturally porous wood surfaces. For smooth hardwoods, such as cedar, mahogany, redwood, and other dense woods, use:Defy Deck Stain for Hardwoods.

This professional deck stain will give you years of protection for your deck and is easy to maintain. On horizontal surfaces simply apply a single maintenance coat every 2-3 years and 3-5 years for the vertical surfaces. No need to strip the deck every time. It may be beneficial to use Defy Wood Brightener to clean and brighten it before the maintenance coat.

All of the Defy professional deck stain colors contain powerful sunscreens to block damaging UV rays. Ultra violet rays cause wood to turn gray and become susceptible to water penetration and decay. Epoxy Fortified wood stain contains synthetic resins that do not attract mildew and algae like other natural resin stains do. Additionally, this professional deck stain is a water repellent.

re: Looking down the road---is Defy Epoxy hard to strip?
Defy Epoxy is a penetrating stain. If applied properly (not over applied) it will be easy to strip a few years down the road if needed.

re: sanding
Sanding is not the proper way to prep. The use of a wood cleaner followed by a wood brightener is the way. 10 gallons would be more then enough for the two coats.

sanding
I built a 12'x22' deck last year using all pressure treated pine. I did not seal it before winter as I wanted to let it dry. I am planning on sealing it this Spring and am wondering if doing a light sanding on the bare wood before applying the sealer is ok? I need to do some sanding to "clean up" some areas. Do you think 10 gallons would be enough for 2 coats? It's hard to estimate with the stairs, posts, beams and rails all added in. Thanks

re: owner
No. That would be a very bad idea. It will adhere or penetrate properly. In addition SW makes a very poor stain that films on top of the wood like a paint. Best to use the Defy Epoxy in one of the tints.

re: Is Defy Epoxy Stain Water Based? How much area does one gallon cover?
Yes it is water based and coverage varies from about 100-150 square feet per gallon. The second coat spreads about 50% farther then the first coat.

Is Defy Epoxy Stain Water Based? How much area does one gallon cover?
I want to strip, clean and stain my deck. I am thinking of buying your Chapin sprayer to spray on the Defy cleaner and the stain. Directions say that the sprayer only works with water-based stains. Is the Defy Epoxy Wood Stain waterbased? Also how much area does one gallon cover? Would I have to buy twice as much to coat wet-on-wet twice?
Thank you.

re: What prep work do I need to do the apply DEFY Epoxy Fortified deck stain
It would be best to strip off the old stains so that the Defy has a chance to properly adhere and penetrate into the wood. Please read this for more tips: Deck Stain Help

re: staining a stained deck
Unfortunately you should not put the Defy Stains or any stains on top of the Sikkens. You should completely remove the Sikkens stain first. If you do not you will have issues with the new stain properly adhering. This is mainly due to the Sikkens being a film forming stain.

staining a stained deck
What is the best product you have to stain over a large redwood deck that has been stained with Sikkens brand stain from day one. The deck has been cleaned with a deck cleaner and mildew remover as well as will be cleaned with a deck brightener prior to re-staining. Also can I use your recommended stain on top the existing coats. thx.

re: Deck Fence And Building Coverage
Yes you can use the Defy Epoxy on all of the wood that you have.

Coverages varies but it is roughly 150 square feet per gallon.

New wood should dry for 2-4 weeks. You will then need to prep the wood with a wood cleaner and a wood brightener. This will remove the mill glaze while opening the wood pores allowing the new stain to penetrate.

re: ?s about DEFY
1. 4-5 business days for shipping to Oregon
2. Yes you can use this for all three types of wood
3. If changing to an oil base down the road you would need to remove the Defy with a wood stain stripper. This goes for any brand when switching to a different brand.
4. 6-12 months for opened can storage.
5. Almost all manufacturers have a water based product with acrylic paint resins. Defy uses a different resin that penetrates better. They are the only one that I know of that uses this type of resin in their water based stains.

?s about DEFY
How long do you anticipate shipping time would be to Oregon for a 5-gallon container?

I want to use this on 1) a pressure treated deck horizontal surface 2) railings of smooth cedar spindles and pressure treated wood supports, and 3) rough cedar siding on a cabin.

Can I use the same product on all three?

Can an oil based stain be used in a few years if not satisfied with the results of DEFY? ...or do I have to keep using a synthetic resin epoxy product once started?

How long can I keep an opened can in storage?

Why haven't other manufacturers started using a synthetic resin, water-based product if DEFY is supposed to be so superior to an oil-based stain?

Thanks.

Great Product
I had almost decided to replace all my porch railings & turned wooden balusters due to their terrible appearance. - After using Thompsons Water Seal for 20 yrs, everything was coated with a dirty gummy residue buildup. - After removing it and applying your Defy Epoxy Wood Stain, the wood, incredibly, looks almost new, and has remained so for the past 3 yrs.
Thanx for a great product, and I would recommend it to anyone. -- Gary ---

re: Prep Defy for Re-Coat
No need to sand the Defy Epoxy off. If it has worn evenly then I would suggest using the Defy Wood cleaner followed by the Defy Wood Brightener. This will prep the wood for re coating without the need for sanding.

The Defy Extreme will retain color longer then the Defy Epoxy as it contains additional nano particles of Zinc Oxide. This reflects UV light, prolonging the graying.

Prep Defy for Re-Coat
Hi,
Two years ago, I used the Defy Epoxy stain on our pine deck. The deck is large and had been neglected for 5 years, so I tried different cleaning products, brightening, and finally sanding to get the wood looking ready. I am now getting ready (psychologically) to do it again with Defy products, but have a few questions:

The deck does not look bad now (no gray, or mold).
- Do I sand the old Defy off?
- Defy Extreme stain sounds good. Is it also Epoxy fortified, and will it last as long or longer than Defy Epoxy?

Thanks
Paul

I just applied the Defy Epoxy cedar tone this weekend and it looks fantastic! We had some strong thunderstorms about 24 hours after I applied it and when I checked in the morning the water had beaded up beautifully. Only complaint is that 5 gallons didn't provide nearly as much coverage as advertised so I'll be getting another 5 gallons this week.
